More than 100 people have been arrested while attending Notting Hill Carnival, the Metropolitan Police has said. The force said that of the 140 arrests around the annual west London festival, 15 had been on suspicion of assaulting officers, one of whom needed hospital treatment for injuries to their hand.

A total of 140 people have been arrested on the first day of a popular carnival. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that, of the dozens of arrests at the Notting Hill Carnival in London, 15 were for assaults on police.

The Met Police said there had been 140 arrests – 105 at the carnival and 35 on approaches to the carnival as a result of proactive policing interventions - as of 7.45pm on Sunday
