Levi Strauss heir and philanthropist Daniel Lurie says he will make streets safer, help small businesses and squash the open-air drug markets that have tarnished San Francisco’s image in recent years.

Daniel Lurie took an initial lead Tuesday night in the San Francisco mayoral race, which by Wednesday morning became a two-candidate contest between the Levi’s heir and incumbent Mayor London Breed.

Daniel Lurie, a local nonprofit founder and an heir to the Levi Strauss & Co. fortune, will become San Francisco’s 46th mayor. He unseated incumbent Mayor London Breed, a fellow moderate Democrat, during Tuesday’s general election in the 14th round of ranked-choice voting.

Lurie beat out 14 other candidates, including Breed and former interim Mayor Mark Farrell, as well as supervisors Aaron Peskin and Ahsha Safai.
