Lewis Hamilton went from the thrill of winning a sprint race for his new Ferrari team to the agony of being disqualified from the Chinese Grand Prix the following day alongside teammate Charles Leclerc.

McLaren missed out on making the front row but will have the pace to compete from behind. Lando Norris had been fastest by almost half a second during Friday’s opening free practice session. Today’s sprint is followed by qualifying for tomorrow’s Chinese Grand Prix. Today: Sprint race (11pm ET), GP qualifying (3:30am ET).

In 2021, F1 drivers received three points for winning the sprint, two for finishing second, and one for coming in third. As this offered little to no incentive to put cars on the line for drivers in the midfield, this was altered in 2022 to the rewards system, which remains in place this year.
