The police say their investigation found that the male allegedly shot himself in the head while running from officers into the drainage ditch.

The incident, which happened between North Star Mall and the airport, began when Jeffrey Kyle Schopp was standing in traffic, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said from the scene.

The officer, who McManus said has about four years of service with SAPD, was not injured. On Wednesday, the man was identified as Jeffrey Kyle Schopp, 33, by the medical examiner's office.
