Firefighters continue to make progress in containing the massive Hughes Fire that broke out Wednesday near Castaic Lake, growing to more than 10,000 acres and forcing mass evacuations. Around 38,000 people remain under evacuation warnings even as containment has reached 36%.

The Hughes Fire in the Castaic area has exploded to thousands of acres within a few hours. Officials quickly issued mandatory evacuation orders and warnings as winds pushed flames near homes. The blaze is burning in a very dry area.

Palisades Fire initially started 10:30 a.m. Jan. 7 in Los Angeles County. It has burned 23,448 acres after being active for 16 days. A crew of 3,274 firefighters has been working on site and they managed to contain 72% of the fire by Thursday morning. The blaze's cause remains under investigation.

It was first reported just after 11 p.m. near northbound lanes of the freeway in Sherman Oaks, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
