NHTSA is launching an investigation into 1.4 million Honda vehicles and oversights during the automakers' previous recalls.

The U.S. government's highway safety agency has launched an investigation into reports of engine failure in up to 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles, according to documents posted on the agency's website on Monday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating concerns that engines on 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles might fail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a formal investigation into more than 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles due to a potential engine defect involving connecting rod bearings. The investigation, which follows a previous recall, will examine if additional vehicles need to be recalled.

The investigation is looking at vehicles that may have a “failure of connecting rod bearings leading to complete engine failure."
