Only hours after a deadly midair crash killed 67 people over the US capital, President Donald Trump was claiming that diversity initiatives and the Democrats were partly to blame for the disaster.

Trump on Thursday variously pointed the finger at the helicopter’s pilot, air traffic control, his predecessor, and other Democrats, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, whom he labeled a “disaster.” Buttigieg responded by calling Trump “despicable.”

There is no evidence that diversity efforts played a role in the crash, and his statements disregarded his own administration’s hiring policies.

Trump on Thursday criticized hiring practices of his predecessor that promoted diversity, equity and inclusion.

He told a news conference that diversity hiring efforts at the Federal Aviation Administration may have led to safety issues.

Jennifer L. Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, said the probe will focus on several factors: “the human, the machine and the environment.”
