An Iraqi living in Sweden who faced threats after burning the Koran in Stockholm in 2023 died in a shooting Wednesday, shortly before a verdict in his trial was about to be revealed.

Salwan Momika, the 38-year-old Iraqi man, who sparked violent protests after burning the Quran has reportedly been shot dead in Sweden. He is said to have been killed on Wednesday evening in an apartment in Hovsjo in Södertälje, Stockholm, BBC reported citing local media reports.

Salwan Momika’s 2023 burning of Islam’s holy book drew ire in the Muslim world. He was killed just before he was set to receive a sentence in Sweden.
