More than two decades after spotting a mysterious, gelatinous, bioluminescent creature swimming in the deep sea, California researchers this week announced that it is a new species of sea slug. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute posted video online of the new sea slug floating gently in the depths.

New deep-sea slug catches crustaceans like a Venus fly trap
Most sea slugs use their raspy tongues to feed on prey that is attached to the seafloor. Instead, Bathydevius caudactylus works a bit more like a Venus fly trap. It uses a cavernous hood to trap crustaceans. Some other unrelated deep-sea species–including some jellyfish, tunicates, and anemones–use this feeding strategy.
