Many of Toyota's North American employees are being recalled back to the office Monday through Thursday starting in September. Bloomberg first reported on the move. A spokesperson for the Japanese automaker confirmed the news to Business Insider but offered no further details.

The automaker in a memo denied the move is designed to reduce headcount but warned that failure to comply could lead to “termination of employment.”

The new executive assignments are aimed at bolstering the automaker’s leadership in its software and electrification segments.
