A potent winter storm is hammering the South with snow and ice, causing major travel disruptions and power outages just a day after it walloped the Plains.

ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is currently under a ground stop, meaning planes cannot fly in our out of the airport. According to flight tracker Flight Aware, more than 1,000 flights at the Atlanta airport have been canceled on Friday. Another 500 flights have been delayed.

North Georgia experienced a winter wonderland on Friday as several inches of snow blanketed the area. Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan says snow will continue in the mountains and occasionally mix with sleet through Friday.

A ground stop until 2 p.m. was issued for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by the Federal Aviation Administration and Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines said they’re dealing with worse weather conditions than expected.

Storm Cora has continued to move east, resulting in hundreds of flight disruptions at major hubs including Atlanta and Charlotte.

The storm is expected to dump snow, sleet and freezing rain across the Southeast before moving up to the Mid-Atlantic.

Several inches of snow, as well as a mix of freezing rain and sleet, are possible in major Southeast cities such as Atlanta, Georgia, as a winter storm barrels across the region through Saturday.

A significant winter storm is ongoing Friday morning across the South after producing snowy and icy weather in the Dallas Metroplex and the southern Plains.
