The tragedies this past month have since shined additional light on the concerns over shortages at air traffic control towers. Locally, they have led to an examination of pilot-submitted reports that revealed how Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport saw nine midair close calls in the last decade.

Although plane crashes are down in 2025 so far, fatalities and severity are higher than this time last year, according to NTSB data.
