The Madre Fire burning in the eastern corner of San Luis Obispo County was 30% containment as of Sunday morning. In a post on its X account, Cal Fire SLO also announced that the massive fire is now 30% contained. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Madre Fire initially started 1:07 p.m. July 2 in San Luis Obispo County, California. Since its discovery four days ago, it has burned 79,936 acres. A crew of 1,122 firefighters effectively contained 30% of the fire by Sunday morning. The cause of it remains under investigation.

Evacuation orders were issued near Highway 166. The highway is closed from U.S. 101 near Santa Maria to Perkins Road in the New Cuyama area of Santa Barbara County.
