Seneca police officers and Oconee County deputies were exposed to fentanyl Tuesday night during an incident at QuikTrip and taken to the hospital, according to a report.
According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy conducted a traffic stop at the QuikTrip gas station located on Highway 123.
"A gram of fentanyl on the streets is approximately $150, making 20 grams $3,000," said state Rep. Jennifer Rhodes, R-Winchester. "If that's how much you have, this is not your personal use.
Fentanyl is also highly addictive, and its potency makes it more toxic. A 2-milligram dose of fentanyl is considered fatal. By comparison, a pinch of salt weighs between 300 and 500 milligrams.
Overdoses and drug poisonings are the third leading cause of death in people under age 20, per the CDC, and synthetic opioids play an increasingly concerning role.
Fentanyl-related deaths dropped from 1,184 in December 2023 to 801 in November 2024, a 32.4% reduction but still well above death rates prior to 2020.
