Princess Diana had her own vision for the 1996 Met Gala. Maison Margiela creative director John Galliano opened up about designing Diana’s dress for Fashion’s Biggest Night during an episode of Hulu's docuseries,

The designer—who currently serves as creative director of Maison Margiela—had just taken over at Dior, and since the '96 Met Gala was themed to celebrate an exhibition about Christian Dior, it seemed only natural for Princess Diana to wear a dress by the French fashion house.

John Galliano has recalled how Diana, Princess of Wales "ripped" the corset out of the custom-made gown she wore to the 1996 Met Gala. In an interview for docuseries In Vogue: The 90s, the fashion designer recounted how he was invited by the British royal to Kensington Palace in London in the lead-up to the annual event to create a bespoke number
