Wow, the CKTS @ Pedernales Falls course is beautiful! The park is so green, hillside creeks are flowing. The Duck Pond is full, but all in all less water than 2015. Y'all will love this challenging & scenic race. Come join the fun. Register online or Sat June 25th onsite. | Tejas Trails Races

Watch as the river floods before your eyes! One of our rangers was extremely lucky to catch the destructive flash flood as it first arrives at Pedernales Falls! In less than 2 1/2 minutes you can see this area go from ideal hiking and rock climbing area to a roaring, swirling, and rushing flood stage. This was captured while the sun was rising, the ground was dry, and the last rain we saw was several days ago. Always be careful and pay attention to your surroundings while visiting the river! | P

We left the falls dripping last night so the river hasn’t frozen yet! It’s cold and icy here at Pedernales Falls State Park but roads and trails aren’t iced over today. We hope you are staying warm, but if you need to get out and hike like some of us, be sure to dress warmly and watch out for slippery surfaces. | Pedernales Falls State Park

Sometimes flooding and rain can displace wildlife, and other times it can attract certain species! These two cottonmouths (also known as water moccasins) were spotted by ranger Granger along Bee Creek this morning. The cottonmouth snake is a venemous snake that prefers creeks, rivers, and lakes as its hunting ground, eating frogs, fish, other snakes, and small rodents. While snakes can and will defend themselves, they never want to bite humans and most of the time will elect to hide or run when

Time to send the kids down to the watering hole! These three coyote pups were very excited to come down to this natural spring for a clean drink of water. Later on this camera caught their mother on camera so she was watching somewhere nearby while the pups were drinking. Coyotes are opportunistic feeders which means they will eat just about anything. They primarily eat rabbits, mice, and carrion, but will also eat fruits, berries, fish, lizards, and frogs if given the chance. If you are camping

You never know what you might experience on the trail. Be sure to pay attention to your surroundings, listen for movement, and expect the unexpected! This morning while hiking along a quiet section of trail, we spotted a mother porcupine in a large oak tree, we know she was a mother because her baby began climbing down in front of us! This baby porcupine already looks like a mini version of its mother, and moves at the speed of a waddle. In the trees adult porcupines eat the bark that is newly g

Introducing our newest secret agent: Double-0-Ouch! And he's got a license to quill... While not quite the stealthiest animal in the woods, the porcupine is a very rare sight for most hikers. They are nocturnal, and often spend most of their time in trees or hiding in caves/crevices around the park. Porcupines during the summer can be found eating small shoots and saplings on the forest floor. In winter they stay up in the tops of the trees eating bark when food is scarce. At the pace of a lazy

This Spooky Wildlife Wednesday we find out who is sneaking around your campsite at night... who is stealing your food behind your back, and who is trying to steal your game camera! It's raccoons! These sneaky but clever residents are well known across the state. If you've ever been camping we're sure a raccoon visited your campsite overnight to check if you left any food unprotected. They'll break into ice chests (even with latches), cargo boxes, luggage, and even tents if they smell food inside
