Behold the Paddle Steamer “Uri,” the oldest operating vessel with a diagonal, compound steam engine, with disc valve gear. This vessel launched in 1901 and was later honored as an ASME Landmark in 1998. The compound engine, built by Sulzer Brothers of Winterthur, Switzerland, uses super-heated steam from the boilers in two stages, high and low pressure, before exhausting it into a condenser.
