How many species do you think the Wildlife Care Center has seen so far this year? Here is just one of those many species, a Virginia Rail, who hit a window earlier this year. These little guys, described as "chicken-like marsh birds," like to hangout in dense marshy vegetation, where they can easily slip away and go unseen. They are one of the many patients that require us to always have worms on deck! A. 55 species B. 75 species C. 130 species D. 155 species | Bird Alliance of Oregon

The Virginia Rail is a secretive marsh bird found across much of North America, favoring wetlands thick with cattails, reeds, and sedges. About the size of a robin but far slimmer, it has a long, slightly curved bill and laterally compressed body that allow it to slip easily through dense vegetation. Despite its small size, it’s surprisingly adept at navigating its watery world, using its long toes to walk across floating vegetation. Its brown and rust-colored plumage blends seamlessly with its

We got lots of great guesses on yesterday's mystery bird ID! 🕵️ This Virginia Rail was very lucky to only sustain a moderate concussion from the window strike that left him stunned enough to be picked up by a passerby. After a couple days of anti-inflammatory medication and monitoring for any new symptoms, he was returned back to the dense marshy habitat that rails prefer. With how quickly the rail disappears into the vegetation, it's no surprise that these small, secretive birds are seldom see

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! … It’s a flying squirrel? 🐿️ Virginia Tech researchers are collecting data atop Whitetop Mountain in Virginia. For the last two years they have been setting acoustic detectors in the high-elevation red spruce forests to monitor populations of Carolina northern flying squirrels. | Virginia Tech

Our first Virginia rail of the year arrives 3 weeks earlier than our earliest on record. This one collided with a window on W. 33rd St. in Manhattan. What a terrible place for a secretive, marsh bird! We’re treating this bird for an eye injury and potential concussion with hopes of a quick release. Please consider helping all our spring migrants with a donation: bit.ly/wbfdonate 📷: Tristan Higginbotham | Wild Bird Fund

Some birds fly straight out of the release carrier, but those more skilled at life on the ground, walk away and disappear!! This Virginia Rail was found in the middle of a busy road and is forever grateful for the observant rescuer who pulled over to investigate. The Rail did not suffer major injuries that prevented them from flying or walking, but the collision with a vehicle left them very dazed, confused and vulnerable to the next passing vehicle or predator!! Fast action after injury saves l

This tiny marsh bird OINKS just like a pig! 🤯 No, seriously, listen to it here (under "Calls") : https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Virginia_Rail/sounds Meet the Virginia Rail! (Rallus limicola) 😍 This cute, spicy, & leggy creature is an elusive resident of freshwater marshlands, where they hide in the safety of tall reeds and other water plants to avoid detection by predators (and birders!). They primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates and tiny fish by using their long, slender beak to probe
