The first women to fly U.S. military aircraft were a part of the WASPs, or Women Air Force Service Pilots. The famous pilot and air racer, Jacqueline Cochran, was one of them. She believed the WASP’s could shoulder logistical stateside burdens while male pilots flew in combat overseas. Between 1942 and 1944, more than 25,000 women applied to the #WASPs, but only around 1,100 completed training and earned their silver pilot’s wings. 38 WASPs died in service of their nation.
